Online poker in Spain continues to grow despite an overall decline in the online gambling industry
Online gambling revenues in Spain in the second quarter of 2020 increased by 18% compared to the same period last year. Although, this is despite the fact that the main driver of growth - sports betting - dropped significantly.
According to the Spanish General Gambling Regulatory Office (DGOJ), gross gambling revenue (GGR) in the online market amounted to €208.9 million ($244.9 million) in the second quarter, which is 4% less compared to the previous quarter.
Sports betting revenue decreased by 20% compared to the same period.
Overall, the volume of sports betting decreased by 49%, while live bets dropped by 35% compared to the previous quarter.
However, online casino GGR grew 36% compared to the previous year, and 23% compared to the Q1.
But more importantly, poker GGR has grown 97% compared to 2019 and 58% since Q1, having amounted to €38.2 million.
DGOJ reported that activity in the second quarter was influenced by COVID-19, as well as a sharp restriction on online gambling marketing and advertising that went into effect from April to June.
